Is it a racetrack ?
Yes.. and no..
There is a trick with the Nürburgring Nordschleife : this is not considered as a racetrack… this a one-way toll road with no speed limit !
So, any motor vehicle can drive there : car, bike, scooter, bus, camping car.. everything at the time.
This is also why you are not obliged to wear an helmet to drive.
Can you drive at the Nürburgring ?
Yes, as any motor vehicle can drive there, anybody with a valid driving licence can do it.
Sounds crazy ? Yes. And for anyone, every first lap at the Nürburgring Nordschleife is epic and unforgettable.
There is an official event open to everyone, this is called the Tourist Drives or Touristenfahrten.
Tourist Drives are organised from March to November.
Most of the time Tourist Drives are scheduled from monday to friday from 17:00 to 19:30
and weekends from 08:00 to 19:00.
As official site says : “The track can be closed at any time for unforeseeable reasons (e.g. due to an accident or bad weather conditions). Method 1 : You can by your ticket online on the official website, it will give you a QRcode to scan directly at entrance.
Method 2 : Near the Nürburgring Nordschleife entrance, there is small shop to buy tickets. It’s only opened on weekend. You will a physical card to scan at the toll.
Remember that one lap is an epic drive of a 20 kms long track with 73 turns !
Insurance and the Nürburgring
As it’s not a racetrack but a one-way toll road, most insurance company will cover you. But it’s a good thing to ask your insurance to be sure !
Driving the Nürburgring Nordschleife can be risky and if you get a crash, it will cost a lot of money.
It’s seems that it’s illegal to forbid the Nürburgring clearly on a contract, so some insurance compagnies, mostly germans, say that you are not covered on “one-way toll road”.
